build a home for history

SUMTER MUSEUM’S NEXT CHAPTER

The Sumter Museum is where you can experience Sumter’s complete story—now explore the newest chapter, the new Sumter Military Museum. From Revolutionary War hero General Thomas Sumter, to World War I pilot Ervin Shaw and the restored Bristol plane similar to one he once flew, to the proud history of Shaw Air Force Base and the veterans who served from World War I through the Global War on Terror, Sumter’s story is one of service and sacrifice. Through the generous donation of Dr. Sammy and Rita Way’s extensive collection of military artifacts, these stories are preserved, their legacy is honored, and their commitment ensures that the sacrifices of Sumter’s veterans will continue to be shared with generations to come. Uncommon Patriotism lives here: in our past, our present, and our future.
